Before you take these steps to become an official, be sure to read through our FAQs to learn more important information.
STEP ONE: CHOOSE AN ASSOCIATION Choosing the right association is an important first step toward becoming a VHSL contest official. You will find lists of associations, by sport, on the VHSL website. STEP TWO: CONTACT THE ASSOCIATION COMMISSIONER A point of contact is listed for each association. In some cases there may be more than one association that works games at schools near where you live or work. Contact SEFOA STEP THREE: REGISTER WITH VHSL Once you've determined the association, and have spoken with the point of contact, check out the VHSL Handbook. When you are ready to move forward, register with VHSL (Whistle). Fall Sports Registration Period for NEW Officials is July 15 – August 5. See complete registration details here. STEP FOUR: GET READY FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON Typically the SEFOA Clinic will be in mid-late July. Officiating football requires endurance for all conditions. A regular exercise regime is crucial. For a couple of great workouts, check out Spartacus & Spartacus 2.0. Be sure between now & then you stay in shape and review training mechanics & videos. You'll be provided with an NFHS rule book for the upcoming season at the clinic, but if you'd like to start studying rules beforehand, rule books are available for purchase. |
