The Southeastern Football Officials Association, Inc. can trace its roots back to shortly after World War II in approximately 1947.
The areas served at that time were Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk County (now known as Chesapeake) and Princess Anne County (now known as Virginia Beach). During the late 1950's the Peninsula based officials split to form a separate officials association. In 1969, the VHSL was formed by the merger of the Virginia Interscholastic Association which served local black high schools, and the Virginia High School Literary and Athletic League to develop and supply officials to the rapidly growing Southeastern Virginia area.
The SEFOA has become one of the premier high school officiating groups in the Southside Hampton Roads area, as well as in the state of Virginia. We serve the perennial powerful Eastern Region football teams of Virginia and some of the most respected private schools in the "Southside" Hampton Roads area, including the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools.
